IG ahead of TikTok - iMusician

One surely hears a lot about TikTok these days. According to the latest news, Instagram has officially surpassed TikTok as the world’s most downloaded app.

Instagram Reels as the primary drive in Instagram’s rising popularity

It was back in 2022 that Instagram released Reels as the newest addition to its app’s features. As expected, Reels pretty much followed the same format as TikTok’s short-form video, making Instagram more attractive and appealing once again.

According to the Sensor Tower data, Instagram was downloaded 767 million times worldwide in 2023, a 20% increase from the previous year. Meanwhile, TikTok was downloaded 733 million times, which is ‘only’ 4% more than in 2022.

As estimated, Instagram also takes the lead in terms of its number of users, having reached 1.5 billion monthly active users last year, while TikTok only had 1.5 billion in 2023. Despite the higher number of MAUs, people still spend more time on TikTok, with an average daily time of 95 minutes compared to 62 minutes per day for Instagram.
