Since 2016, French producer Roland Cristal has been crafting his distinctive brand of electronic music, blending internet samples with a tongue-in-cheek humor. After his track "VENDETTA" became a festival sensation in 2022, he's earned recognition for his sweat-inducing live shows that mix raw energy with playful kitsch. We caught up with him for a quick Q&A about his career so far.
You have a unique sound! How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it before?
Regressive Tekno! I've also got some Mákina vibes.
Tell us about your journey as an artist. Did you start making music when you were young?
Yes, I first learned piano and classical theory. Then, jazz techniques and guitar. I had several rock bands over 15 years, but they never really exploded. Once, my friends and I created DJ accounts on SoundCloud – that’s how Roland Cristal was born.
Do you have advice for independent artists wanting to stand out?
Work a lot, go out to meet people who can help you in your career, cross your fingers... Because the main part, in my mind, is luck. (Even though it couldn't work without effort and help from other people)
You’ve had a string of shows in Europe lately (and more upcoming). What’s your favourite thing about performing live?
My favourite thing is to see people who I have never met … with my head on their shirt, smiling at me, and enjoying what I'm proposing!
